Should we use glue for 3D printing?

카리스χάρης 2024. 5. 19. 02:08

It may be possible, but it is not a recommended solution.

When we print 3D object, we face many failures.
one of the failure comes the most is the detachment of an object from the bed.

after two hours object detached from the bed

To solve this problem,
there is a recommendation to glue object to prevent them off the bed.

I don't want to recommend this for the future printing user.

I also found my model has the problem.
part of the bottom of the object seems to start detaching.

Do we need any emergency treatment?(An)
or should we leave it that way?(Bn) or start over?(Cn)

detachment is happening from the bed.

((An))
I used glue.
let's see what happened when I applied glue in it.

pause the printer.

pause printer

and applied glue.

applied glue

resume printing.

on going.

at the begining, the liquid glue is placed perfectly between the object and the bed.
but after some minuite, the detached part is going a bit wider.
glue didn't hold the part to the bed side as I expected.

let's observe little more time.
while it is completing the second story of the model,
the space of the bottom part was even growing.
bottom part of the object was going further from the bed side.

even bringing some support part to the object side. support part should stick to the bed.

after little more time,
we can see clearly that
even glue detached from the bed, but attached to the object.

It goes even risky.
but I will keep watch what is happening.

fortunately printing succeeded.

The printing was successful, but
I'm not sure if it was because of the adhesive.
Just because the act of applying glue occurred before the object printed,
that alone does not make it the cause of the effect.

again,
we had our input action for the printing with gluing,
to solve the detachent problem of object from the bed.

but it doesn't tell us it is the factor of the success of printing helping the object to stay safe on the bed.

this tells us glue didn't help the attacent of the object to the bed.
maybe it works in some proportion, but this is not the essential solution for this.

not only with this model.
I had two years of experience spending almost everyday printing and struggling.

whatever I try to put glue, the object meant to be detached ended with detached result.
the glue does not change the situation significantly.
it only helps sometime.

so, we can't generalize the glue solution.

What about the quality of the glue?

okay. lets do the second experiment.
if we want to use glue, which glue should we use?
liquid or hard?

let's compare the attachment of filament melted, solid glue, and hard glue.

liquid glue
hard glue

stay over night

I left them for a night.

then detached them.
hard glue worked the better.

which glue is stronger?

and also let's compare the result without using glue.

I printed the same object three time.

1st trial : detachment happened, liquid glue applied.

2nd trial: no problem happened with the same 'stll' file.

3rd trial: detachment happended again, but left it printed without applying any treatment.

the Red one applied glue, the 3rd Orange one didn't applied. but the result is the same.

even without applying any glue, we can also get perfect outcome(the 2nd).

(An)/ (Cn) / ( Bn)

(An) glue applied/ (Cn) start over / (Bn)leave it without glue

Conclusion

without applying glue,
with the same stl file,
if we observe the detachment of the object,

leave it or start over until we get stable result.

without glue, start over woked.

don't waste your time and glue to solve the detachment problem.
just start over or leave it.

if the detachment problem keep happening,
you have to find meaningful generalizable solution.
such as
debugging your modeling process, slicing process, and printer setting and conditions.
don't use glue.

good luck.
have a nice day.
